Naturally OrangeOur kids get enough artificial candy gunk this time of the year, don’t they? Why not try a way create orange colored frosting for your little pumpkins? I developed this naturally orange colored frosting for some pumpkin cookies the boys and I made last Halloween. They were so cute, so tasty and so naturally cute that I just had to share. First, make your cut-out pumpkin cookies. We like to use gingerbread dough for cut-outs, but whatever floats your boat is just fine. Once they’re cooled, whip up some… Naturally Orange Frosting [more] September 2, 2009
Banana Chocolate Chip BreadI got this recipe from my mom, who got it from a friend, whose daughter found it from another source. In other words, it has been passed from person to person to person, which in my book, speaks volumes. Who would pass on a dud recipe? This bread is a bit more decadent than the last two days’ recipes, but everyone needs a treat now and then. The miniature chocolate chips are just enough chocolate to satisfy a chocolate craving, without overwhelming the bread. 1 ½ cups all purpose flour August 17, 2009
Waning...I know it is cliche, but I can hardly believe that summer is ending so soon! Next week R embarks upon elementary school and kindergarten, so I'm soaking up these last few lazy (okay, so any day with children isn't truly *lazy*, but you get my drift) of summer before the school bus beckons. A cousin of mine shared this fun snack idea with me earlier this summer. The original recipe uses boxed Jell-o, but we used natural gelatin and juice to achieve our snacking fun without any additives. Need use for your already-bought Jell-o? More on that tomorrow... Berry CrispI am not sure how things are in your neck of the woods, but in Ohio, the blueberries are in abundance. The blueberries are fresh, easy to find and inexpensive. Two years ago my mom gave me a great tip: buy blueberries in bulk and freeze them in the original containers. The blueberries freeze quickly and keep well. To thaw the berries, simply run them under warm water. This washing accomplishes to things: it washes the berries before use and it quickly thaws them. [more] July 22, 2009
Wrapped UpWhile I know intellectually that my boys are growing every day, there are infrequent moments that seem to age them instantly. These random growth milestones aren't in the new parent parenting books. While the books discuss at great length about verbal development, they seldom pinpoint when you might get your first sassy, "okkkk mom!" Or while the experts can give you guidelines for physical development, they cannot tell you how cool it is when your child tackles *that one* piece of playground equipment they have always been too afraid to climb. Food and MoodEarlier this week I wrote about kids, summer and hydration. It got me thinking about how much food can also impact their moods, and if I have to look to a particular reason why my boys are so easily swayed by meals (or lackthereof), I need only find a mirror.

Slow Melt PopsiclesHave you seen or tried slow melt popsicles? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago when a friend of mine had them in her freezer and whipped them out for the kids after dinner. I was skeptical but G, who at two years old is still mastering the art of eating frozen desserts, was able to eat his popsicle without a single drop or stain on his shirt. I was sold. [more]

The big game -- who've you got?Fun fact: the NFL takes its trademark rights very seriously. I'm not totally sure I'm allowed to refer to this weekend's important athletic competition by its name, unless I want to be hauled off in chains and sent to rot in an island prison alongside the first guy to say "Xerox" when he meant "photocopy." Instead, I have to call it "the big game," or the "championship," or "a bunch of hilarious commercials constantly interrupted by a boring football game." As a New England Patriots fan, I'm finding it hard to choose a rooting interest in this one. There are arguments for and against each team. [more] |
