My burnt arm

There's a scar on my arm…

I sat at the kitchen table. My seven-month-old sister sat on my lap. My mother was in her bedroom with the door closed.

As I poured hot coffee into a foam cup my sister swung her little arms and knocked over the coffee. I quickly lifted her high in the air so she wouldn’t get burnt. But when I brought her back down to my lap, I screamed! The skin on my arm had shriveled up. [more]

"The Brady Bunch"… to die for

Get in the tub, my mother said.
Before I did I inspected the bottom of my feet.
My feet ain't dirty, I yelled. [more]

Bag of Tricks: The Pool Safety Edition

I'm sorry to start the week with a sobering post, but this topic has been on my mind for a few days now. Last week a five-year old boy drowned at a local, private, neighborhood pool. It wasn't our pool, thankfully, but a pool very nearby. The day after this happened I took T. to a birthday party and two of the moms there had been at the pool the afternoon of the drowning. They were ashen-faced still, and sad--marked in that way you are when you have to see something as terrible as a small body taken out of a swimming pool on a sunny summer afternoon. [more]

Helmets, the new sports accessory

This past weekend, I picked up a new winter sportsnowboarding. After watching little kids on boards zoom past us with precise control, we decided to hit the bunny hill. But on our second run the fun came to a halt. My friend took a back dive and banged her head so hard she blacked out. [more]

Kids and gun safety

There was a story in the news recently about an eight-year-old kid who accidentally shot himself in the head with an Uzi at a gun range, under the supervision of an instructor and his father. In the wake of a tragedy like this, there's always a lot of finger-pointing as the old arguments flare up. It just proves what we've been saying along, say the gun owners and the gun opponents both.

Monkey what?

T. had a playdate yesterday with J., her best-friend-forever from preschool. When J.'s mom called to set it up, she suggested we meet at a new popular inflatable place in town. I hesitated, because I've had past experience with another popular inflatable place and just thinking about inflatables makes me want to crawl into a corner with my hands over my head. But it was hot yesterday and I was curious about this new, much hyped-up, fun play place. And T.

Look, Ma, no hands!

Today was the first day that it’s illegal to drive in California while holding/talking on a cell phone. Hands-free is okay, but if you get caught holding onto your phone, the fine is hefty. As I’m not the most prolific driver/talker in the history of the world, I’m not sure that I’ll be too affected by this law. There are those, however, who will have their worlds rocked! There are those who might actually have to pay attention (even to their kids!) as they drive. [more]
