The summer movies you didn't seeSummertime is when Hollywood releases its biggest, flashiest films, and this summer has been no exception. Loud, noisy, and often dumb movies like Transformers 2, Star Trek, and G.I. Joe have raked in hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. But some smaller films are deserving of your time and attention, too. Don't let these movies pass you by: [more]

John Hughes, 1950-2009I can't ever recall a string of celebrity deaths quite like this one. Yesterday, the celebrated writer and director John Hughes died suddenly of a heart attack at age 59. [more] June 11, 2009
Saddest kid's movies of all timeAnyone in their 20's or older often looks back fondly on how things "used to be". Well, maybe 20's is a little young to be thinking that way, but at the ripe old age of 26, there have been a couple of times when I've gotten a little nostalgic for the good old days that didn't require having an electronic device attached to your body 24/7. But I digress. I'll save that rant for another post. This post, my dear readers, is dedicated to...
Bambi! Well, kinda.

Trailer parkAs winter drags on and on, and on, we all find ourselves looking forward to what the warm weather will bring. Baseball season, barbecues, and long walks outside are all spectacular, but there's nothing I look forward to more than big, loud summer movies. There's still a few months left to go before they're in theaters, but we can watch trailers online right now.

The Middle EpicI went to the movies today to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It tells a story of a man aging backwards. It was a bizarre yet remarkable movie. My Ebert and Roeper analysis is this: It’s provocative and poignant. Brad Pitt is spell-binding. It’s a 'must see.’ I give it two thumbs up. The movie made me think about the middle of my life. Thomas Kinkade: Painter of light, micro-manager of direct-to-video moviesI understand that the leading minds of the art world aren't terribly fond of Thomas Kinkade, painter of light. Their criticism no doubt makes him cry himself to sleep every night, on top of a pile of money. Wikipedia claims the man earned $53 million between 1997 and 2005, and that 1 in 10 American homes have at least one piece of his artwork. [more]

A New Perspective on Parenthood (the Movie)I’ve always liked the movie, Parenthood. Besides it’s killer cast, anchored by Steve Martin, the writing is great (which is what always makes or brakes a movie for me). But, last night, for the first time, I watched Parenthood as an actual parent. Hard to believe that I’ve seen the movie at least 20 times, but never in the last two-and-a-half years. The funny thing is, now that I have a kid, the movie’s not quite as funny.
