Stop the world...

I went to the mall last weekend. I don't like shopping malls, even if I once did, a long, long time ago. If I have to go to the mall these days it's because I need to buy one specific thing (vacuum cleaner bags from Sears, for instance, how exciting) and then I'm in and out. Wandering aimlessly around the mall, with all the lights and people and excessive things spilling out of stores, gives me a headache. I'll take an hour at my favorite thrift store any day. [more]

Broccoli Salad

Is your extended family like ours? For better or for worse, there are certain dishes that always, always appear at large holiday gatherings. My Aunt Di has been making her famous broccoli salad since I can remember. It ain’t gourmet, and there are a lot of different versions of this salad out there, but hers is the best, hands down.

Aunt Di brings this broccoli salad each Thanksgiving and Easter and it is a real crowd pleaser. As we inch ever so closer to summer, keep this recipe handy for a quick potluck item or picnic salad.

Yesterday was Epiphany, and I might have not thought about it until much later in the day except that my mother was visiting. Before she left yesterday morning, she remarked wistfully over breakfast that it was Epiphany. [more]

Beat the heat

It’s 9:18 p.m. and it’s 87 degrees in my house. Earlier today, the temperatures crept dangerously close to 100, as the first heat wave of the year left people scrambling for the air-conditioned confines of their offices, movie theaters, cars and (though I certainly don’t have one) pools. It’s the kind of heat that results in two kinds of conversations:

1)    “Holy crap, it’s hot.”
2)    “Holy crap, it’s hot. Damn global warming.” [more]
