On a wing and a prayer

There’s no doubt that we are experiencing some trying economic times. Gas prices climb to astronomical numbers (the lowest I ever remember was $.59 – I guess I’m old), milk prices are rising and…well, what prices aren’t skyrocketing? Going home

I have a friend who travels quite a bit. She’s married, with two kids. I called her once just as she was getting ready to head out on one of her three-day boondoggles. “Bummer,” I said. “You’re leaving on another trek?” She couldn’t agree less. Much has been written recently about the fact that my generation is the first to financially fall short of my parents' generation. As a dad and – more importantly – a man, this is a disheartening fact. It doesn’t matter how true it may be. It doesn’t matter if the facts and figures all support the reality. Believe me. I'm working.

I left the fabulous spring conditions of the Bay Area for where I sit now – awaiting snow in Omaha, Nebraska. It’s my first trip to Nebraska, and while I haven’t really seen any of it, I can say without a doubt, that people in the Midwest are unbelievably nice. [more]
