First Feedings

So we have a new cousin in the extended SP family, a little boy Isiah who is sweet as sweet can be. Remember me sharing my cousin Jill’s watermelon salsa recipe this summer and mentioning how her pregnancy craving was watermelon? Well, Jill’s own little sweet pea Isiah has arrived…actually he arrived in October, but I was on H1N1 quarantine and I refused to subject Isiah to my germs, so despite being ridiculously excited to meet (and hold) him, I waited until the germ coast was clear. Blame it on the teething, yeah yeah

Once my baby hit the ripe old age of three months, the mysterious and unpredictable malady of teething was all of a sudden a convenient yet viable diagnosis for any abnormal and/or unpleasant behavior. Excessive drooling, refusal to eat, runny nose, first-thing-in-the-morning fussiness, mid-day fussiness, evening fussiness, middle-of-the night fussiness … you get the idea.

So for three months now, we’ve been using this handy, catch-all excuse to visitors or family members whenever she seems the slightest bit undesirable to hang out with. “Oh, she must be teething,” we’ll say as she whines and squirms in Grandpa’s arms. “Poor thing.” [more]

The saddest, scariest article you will ever read

To anyone who doesn't understand why we need newspapers, an article in last Sunday's Washington Post Magazine may make you reconsider. In it, Gene Weingarten looked at some tragic cases of parents forgetting their infant children in the car, with fatal results. [more]

Sleep talking

The other day I was in our local Barnes & Noble buying Scott a CD for his birthday. The friendly cashier lady, whom I like a lot, and who I swear was pregnant with her first child only like the day before, told me tiredly that she had a five-month-old at home, and she was feeling utterly exhausted.

"She's not sleeping well," she told me. "I can't wait until she grows out of this phase." [more]

Absolute truths

In one of my classes last week, we talked about the concept of universal truths--known also as absolute truths--and about the need human beings have for each other. An absolute truth, by the way, is an unalterable and permanent fact, and we all have different understandings of what absolute truths are in our own lives. In my class we talked about how humans need connections, and that it's impossible for a person to exist in isolation and flourish and survive. [more]

First birthday cake and other sugary stuff

My twins recently celebrated their first birthday, which of course meant cake and icing for the first time. I initially planned on making a "healthy" cake, something with flavors already familiar to them, like a pumpkin or banana cake. But my husband insisted on real cake for their first birthday. [more]

Litmus test

Yesterday afternoon I held a week-and-a-half-old baby for a long while, marveling at his tiny fingers and feet, and the way his hair lay in flat wisps across his scalp. I held him tentatively at first, then with more certainty, and watched his body twitch the way newborns do when they are fast asleep. I held him, and I held my breath, too, worried about what I would feel.

Earlier in the afternoon, Scott had called on the way home from a tennis match. He proposed a quick visit to my sister-in-law's later that afternoon to see the new baby. [more]

Favorite bedtime books for babies and toddlers

As part of our nightly bedtime routine, my husband and I read three books to our children. But things have been getting a little boring lately (at least for us adults!) and I’ve been looking to expand my babies’ bedtime reading repertoire. Plus, with Christmas and Hanukkah coming up, books will make a great gift.

Although we don’t always read books specifically about bedtime, I like the idea of reading books about bedtime at bedtime. I think it helps our kids to settle down and get ready for sleep.

These are our current bedtime favorites: [more]
