Box Day

For weeks now T.'s excitement about the upcoming holidays (Christmas and her birthday in January--an event which should be a national holiday, as far as T.'s concerned) has been building and building. It's difficult for most small children to get as excited about Thanksgiving, as they do about the thought of getting lots of gifts over the holiday season. My students, on the other hand, have been thinking about Thanksgiving for weeks and weeks now. [more]

Shape Make and Hide

In our focus on shapes this week I wanted to do an active game that got my son up and moving. Young children learn in all different ways and exposing them to various experiences will only encourage more learning!

1. Gather your materials, all you need are some pipe cleaners!

Their Job Is To Play

Young children need play. Developmentally this is the time that they make the connections, they learn most naturally and practice the social skills we may wonder if they will ever get. Because of my blog here and No Time For Flash Cards it is often assumed that I sit with my child for long periods of time doing craft after craft at a table... the reality is , is that mostly we play. Learn with Candy

All my son wants to do is relive Halloween. It was his first time trick or treating and he fell in love. I decided to harness this candy madness and use it to teach. Check back tomorrow for more candy related learning!

Paper dreams

One thing that's really struck me as different now that T. has a couple months of kindergarten under her belt, is what effect school has had on her assertiveness. She's a pleaser by nature and sometimes asserting herself takes a back seat to my big-hearted girl's desire to please. But we've noticed at home that she's holding her own with L. They are squabbling and fighting more because of this, but I imagine that once both of them adapt to this shift things will settle down--at least I hope so (please oh please).

Before it gets too cold, get outside!

I am savoring the days left before the rains come here in the Pacific North West. I know that some places have already gotten snow but I hope most of you can still use this easy and fun game outside with your kids.

1. Gather your materials. You will need some sidewalk chalk and either a patio or sidewalk.

2. Write the numbers 1-10 on the ground. [more]
